Over the past four or five decades, the nature of retirement has changed fundamentally. In 1970 the average retirement age in the U.S. was 65, while life expectancy was 67. Today, the average retirement age is 62 and people are living well into their 80s.
Despite this, the “expert” advice and mainstream media reporting on retirement has scarcely changed to reflect this new reality as lived by today’s pre-retirees and retirees. Virtually every article you read on the topic is the same old tired lament about working as long as possible and pinching your pennies so you can collapse into your rocking chair for a solitary final decade or two.
But this isn’t our grandparents’ day and we’re not going to live our grandparents’ retirement.
These stories are looking at a 21st century issue from a 20th century perspective. Opportunities exist today that previous generations never had access to.
With the right strategies, you can build an income to supplement your retirement nest egg doing something you love…from home or wherever you want to be. Or you can find ways to reduce your costs and still afford the lifestyle you want. Or you can use new approaches to pursue travel and enriching pastimes while hardly spending a dime.
That’s the modern retirement. It’s active, it’s engaging, it’s exciting, and it’s what we highlight here at The Savvy Retiree.
Our mission is to uncover and share the many solutions that exist today that can allow you to live a richer life without having to work harder or for years longer.
And we want to hear your story…
If you’ve created a unique side income…discovered a brilliant strategy to make your savings stretch further…or simply found an interesting way to enrich your life in retirement…tell us about it.
